When Maznah engages in creating her abstract works, she actually enters each piece of her large paper or canvas paintings. As with Tibetan mandalas, Indian kolam or rangoli, and aboriginal sand drawings, Maznah creates her paintings in a horizontal fashion and becomes one with the work while she drips, strikes, gestures or pours on the surface. At the heart of her paintings are the lines. Pure, strong, direct lines. They reveal her thinking, her mood – when they meander, she is lost; when energetic, she is close to ecstasy. The surface becomes the artist’s world, and Maznah enters a transcendent state to lose herself into an other-worldly experience where the truth of her emotions cannot help but reveal themselves in paint.
