What is art appreciation?
Many people get intimidated when it comes to art appreciation. They begin to give excuses like they don’t draw or have poor colour sense so they cannot appreciate art! That is really sad cause they are denying themselves the opportunity to enjoy an activity that can move the spirit, stir the soul and instill a wonder of beauty.
The fact is that art appreciation is separate from art creation. As you don’t need to compose or be able to produce a CD to enjoy music, so you don’t need to be an artist to enjoy art. Consider the following from the book State of Art by Sandy Nairne (Chatto and Windus, 1987):
“ Every human being is an artist … by artists I don’t just mean people who produce paintings and sculptures or play the piano, or are composers or writers. For me a nurse is also an artist, or, of course, a doctor or a teacher. A student, too, a young person responsible for his own development. The essence of man is captured in the description ‘artist’.
How true! You may not be aware of it but if you are doing anything of value, you are an artist in your own right.
Another analogy is to liken art appreciation to music appreciation. We may have different tastes in music but we all like music of some sort. The more we listen, the more our musical senses are heightened. Appreciating art is no different. The more we look at art, the more we enjoy it and find meaning in it.
Why is Art Appreciation not as popular as it should be?
It is a tragedy that whilst so many people turn to music to bring aesthetic pleasure to their souls, so few turn to art. Perhaps one factor has to do with accessibility. Whilst good music is readily reproducible and hence available thanks to digital technology, good art is unfortunately not so easily reproducible or accessible. Viewing an original painting or sculpture is still the best way to truly capture the joy and pleasure of viewing a great art piece. Unfortunately viewing a picture of the same painting or sculpture in a magazine or book does not come anywhere close to the real thing.

What art should I buy?
Essentially buy art you like at a price you like. The art piece should do something to you, be it move you or even disturbed you. But as with any commodity, as a general rule, you get what you pay for. Hence, be prepared to pay a premium for works from top artists like Epple’, May Lim, Siebel, Hofner, Colville. Nonetheless, if you have a good eye for art, you many spot a masterpiece by a relative unknown that you may reap you a great investment reward in the future.
